Heater went out while driving
« on: January 27, 2015, 10:18:21 AM »

Hello again
I noticed a strange smell the last couple of days coming from my vents and now I don't have Any heat blowing out.
Could it be my blower resistor,  has anyone changed one of these out and where is it located.
Looks like my xr2 is slowly becoming my weekend project car.

If you look behind the glove box you'll see the blower motor. Directly behind it is the blower motor resistor. It has a white connector, 4 wires blue with stripes.

With it smelling at the vents then it could be the resistor block or the blower motor itself.

First check under the hood at the fuse panel by the battery. Make sure the MAIN 60 amp fuse didn't blow. Most likely not or you would have other problems.

You can do either of these two test first. You have a 50/50 guess. :)

Unplug the resistor block. On the resistor block side check for ohms between...
Blue/white wire and...
Blue/yellow... 2.8 Ω
Blue ... 1.2 Ω
Blue/red... 0.6 Ω
At any time it reads open then go ahead and replace the resistor block.

The blower motor you can unplug and with jumper wires run 12v to the black wire and ground the black/white stripe to chassis ground and it should come on.

Other cars I have worked on if the resistor block goes bad it will usually run on the high speed as it doesn't go through a resistor. Only the other speeds will quit. But this is a Capri built by a bunch of Kangaroos so who knows. Lol.

I would think the blower motor but it's sealed so I'm not sure of the stinking. The resistor block is exposed and mounted on the heater box so it could stink you out. It's a coin toss.

Also, if you need to at any time like when testing, you can squeeze the sides of the glove box and it will drop down to keep you from standing on your head.

Heater core at Advance is $71.99.
Order online and pick up in the store.
Use discount code...

TRT37, gets you $30 off. You'll have to spend $3.01 more to use that. So that's about $52 including tax.

A124... $25 off $70

A54... 15% off plus $25 coupon good off future $50 purchase. Coupon good to March 15. Offer expires 1/31.

If the item isn't in the store you can't order online picking up in store. You remedy that by calling the store and they will have it tomorrow. Then you call then again and ask them to return it to stock so you can order it online. They do it everyday and don't mind. A greenhorn might not know the process of returning it to stock. Rock Auto is $91.

I don't see them having a resistor block. You probably have to get that from Roo-sports.com or a junk car.

The heater core at Advanced Auto is part #398290 and costs $45.99. Rockauto also has the part # 398290, but their price is listed as $57.79.

Very kewl, thank you very much.  I see one in my future.  I have barely any heat and I have the door wired open.  A PO apparently used about a gallon of stop leak on mine.  The block, IAC hose, IAC, and throttle body were all stopped up tight.  Replaced the hose, unplugged the block and IAC with a drill.  Yes a drill, nothing else would touch it.  Haven't attempted the throttle body yet.  Oh, did I mention the radiator was also stopped up and had to replace it also.

excellent news. although, when i put in my car on the advanced site, a 91 xr2, that part number says it does not match. but if it truly fits, this is a goldmine of information!!
