Repairing the Temp controls

So has anyone attempted to repair their damaged temperature controls?  I have the machined aluminum repair arm, but it's a PITA to get the thing in place.  There's just no room to work under the dash.  Anyone have any tricks to getting this accomplished without taking the whole dash apart?

I don't have any heat either, but haven't had time to work on it.  Hope we can get some help.

Me to.  I'm using a zip tie to hold the damper closed in the heat position. It works, but I'm in Texas where it's cool in the morning and hot in the afternoon.

It's covered in Group 36 (ventilating, heat and air conditioning) of the tech Capri manual starting on page 20.

According to it you can adjust the function and air control cables by removing the RH center carpet cover. The temperature cable by removing the LH center carpet cover. The illustration shows the man's hands in there which is right at the lever.

If that doesn't work then you'll have to remove the center console and instrument panel like you are removing the whole heater box assembly.

Thanks Mitch.  I have a service manual and had read the chapter on the HVAC controls.  I was hoping someone might have a couple of tips on how to do it a bit easier than that.

The link to the heater door on mine is broken, I'm guessing I will need a new control or will I need the entire heater box?

Pull out the driver seat so you can lay out and see what's going on.  Once you can see everything, the replacing isn't too bad.

Thanks, I was considering that.  I was having the least amount of trouble getting my fat old body into a position where I could see it and touch it at the same time.

The part outlined in red is what has always broken on my cars.

If I remember right that silver phillips screw is removed, and the broken part removed and the new one put in...Chris

That's kool, the piece you have circled in red is the piece that's broken I think.  I'm sure that part isn't available in the after market.  Wonder how much he wants for the aluminum part he's making?

Doesn't matter about the cost, pay the man... I have harvested these out of junked cars, they ALL are already broken or have cracks and about ready to break.  If you have some decent tools and have more time than money, you can make your own, using the broke one as a template...Chris

Having seen that pic, I've been thinking the same thing.  I assume the lever at the top, near A, that moves the door to give you heat?

Yeah, that's the lever you can tie a string to for operating the heater until you get around to fixing it right...Chris
