Replacing the fuel tank. The old one was rust free EXCEPT for the vent tube at the top. Totally rusted away. Ordered a new Dorman brand tank for the 323. Also replacing the fuel pump and strainer since I am in there.

The old tank was super clean inside, no signs of rust or debris.

I'm giving the underbody and inside the frame rails another coat of Fluidfilm, going to do the tank before I install it.

Mighty clean under there for a 26 year old car. Nice looking exhaust too. Not bad for Michigan.

Today I repaired my shifter linkage using bronze bushings (see my post under Non Capri parts). What a great improvement!!!

Also my car has Hella H4 headlights and I have not been impressed with nighttime illumination. Today I installed a headlight relay harness to hopefully improve brightness of the headlights. Those relay kits take the load from the headlight switch and provide a better ground. I will see if the upgrade makes a noticable difference when driving home from the cruise night tomorrow.

Tomorrow it's supposed to be 79 degrees here. First cruise night of the season in Wauseon Ohio. It's a bit of a drive, but planning on going.

(Not actually today, Thursday)
Sold her to another Capri enthusiast who has 2 other ones. It's been a fun but exhausting experiment - to set up a Capri XR2 for show and use it for my daily driver all year 50 miles a day, despite rain, snow, sleet, ice, white-outs, fog, deer, and SUVs and semis.

We entered 9 shows together in the last 4 years and came away with 5 trophys (1 best of show) and made it to and from work 25 miles each way every work day except 1 (broken clutch cable 23 miles from home.)

The only problem became the unreliability of the 27 year old turbocharged car and the difficulty to get parts or find anyone who could work on it. But slowly another insidious problem began to arise. In the end it was always on my mind, always requiring my attention and I found myself becoming obsessed with it, sometimes finding my worth in it.

Just imagine wearing clothes, say a suit that is so outrageous that everyone stares at you or turns to look when you go by. Now imagine wearing that outfit everywhere you go, to the store, to church, to a wedding, to a funeral, to buy something on Craigslist, to deliver meals on wheels on the poor side of town, and so on... After a while it dawns on you, this suit has become a symbol of me and I don't like what it says anymore. It draws too much attention to me, and keeping it perfect is way too much of a chore, can't have a wrinkle, no spots.

Now I know that most, maybe all of you wont feel the same way about the analogy above and for good reasons. Most of you don't worry and labor weekend after weekend to keep your suit (or Capri if you haven't seen through the analogy yet) perfect, waxed, scuff free in summer heat and winter blizzards, all the time wondering if everyone around is noticing you, but that's where I found myself, so I came to the conclusion that the XR2 had to go - there was too much of me in it to separate us, so she had to go.

It's been wonderful attending Capri Gatherings with you all and meeting a bunch of you, and the help on this forum has been priceless. Thank you so much for all your help, kind words of encouragement and friendship. I sincerely hope someone steps up and rescues you all from the one part supplier left on the internet who seems to know that he or she has cornered the market. But for the moment, I'm enjoying the relief of finding Focus parts much more readily and not needing to look as often (I hope).

Now I drive an average 07 Focus ZX3 stick which has enough zip to be fun to drive, but isn't much to look at (kinda like comfortable jeans) and seems fairly reliable.

May you enjoy your Capris and keep it all in perspective.

Sad to see it go. That was one really nice car. Will you stick around?  You are a great contributor here.
Sounds like your baby went to a good home, though :)

Well, now that the snow will hopefully stay away, I've been driving the 92 XR2 daily. Over the winter I've wanted to do a few things to it like fit the VJ11/Tbird hybrid with the FMIC I have sitting around, but with this new house and it's lovely quirks, the propane fill bill has it's fangs firmly in my neck.

Anywho, I've replaced the distributor cap and rotor, thermostat, added grounds, replaced LF strut mount, flushed the cooling system, brake pads all around, rebuilt the rear left caliper.

The bearing for the parking brake mechanism had failed, and caused it to stick out of alignment upon cable engagement. That damn bearing came straight from Mazda for $40 with shipping. Whole lot of fun getting that rusty thing apart, and them needles were damn near paste.

Here's what's lame: The flush didn't do a damn thing for my overheating. I found that the thermostat I had ignored when I did the head gasket and all the seals on the head was backwards in the housing, according to the FSM. So I replaced it while doing the flush with a prestone flush additive, to no effect. Ran that with distilled water for a couple days for deep clean, to no avail. probably a clogged heater core or radiator, so a back flush is the next order of business before replacing those. Good times.

I replaced the dimmer switch with the one from my parts car due to a stupid mistake involving a boost controller tapped into a source voltage in the center console, which also did nothing. Still no dash illumination. learned of a resistor pack of sorts that sits behind the cluster that apparently is the culprit, unless I've missed a fusible link in my study of that circuit. Does anybody have a visual description of that module they could post below?

Still having alternator issues. When my OE 70 amp unit shit the bed, I swapped in the 85 amp unit, harness, and mounting bolt from my parts car. That lasted 6 months, and replaced it again with an Oreilly Remanufactured unit. Lasted another 6 months. Once more replaced, and it's failed once again. All of the fuses appear fine, and I've cleaned every ground on this car. Voltage regulator, every time. I even used proper belt deflection on the last two. What gives? Thinking of switching back to the 70 amp unit if I can't find the source of the repeat failures. Any insight on this would be welcomed.

Getting my list together for winter projects, one of which is a bit of bodywork, replacing the headliner, new soft top, bottom end gaskets, Clutch (maybe), fabricating an air dam/valence, venting my spare hood and re-gooping the framework for the hood to the skin, maybe fit better tires than the already-separating and vibrating General Altimax tires on there.

I discovered there's no current running to the lighting dimmer switch and tried to remove that control module it's connected to. Problem is that it's connected to something else somewhere... the fuse box maybe??

My clutch slave cylinder died on me in the middle of traffic the other day. After she was towed home, I decided to replace both the master and slave as long as I had to be working on the clutch hydraulics, and compared to my old Fiat X1/9, this repair was a walk in the park

I only had to remove the battery, wiper motor, and splash guards. The X1/9 needed the steering column, driver seat, pedal assembly, exterior vents, wiper motor, and center console to come out before you would even have enough room to get a flare wrench near the master cylinder

I still need to get around to replacing my valve cover gasket, but it's such a small leak that I keep putting it off

If you're using hella ECE H4 units and not impressed then there's something wrong with your bulbs or wiring. Did you swap the wires around to the standard h4 bulb requirements? I've been using Hella h4s since 1988 in my Escort, Accord, pathfinder, and Jeeps and I've never been dissatisfied.

Got a suction hose made for the A/C.  Will cold air be next?
