Dreamt up an awesome security system for my xr2 SE capri...

Includes

  • gps tracker with sms commands sent and received on android tablet
  • 2 stage microwave sensor to discourage anyone getting too close when parked with top down
  • remote central locking, with trunk release upgrade and flashing light confirm
  • RFID added to ignition system
  • siren with key override, and its own internal battery enabling continued hayhem even when power wires cut
  • connection to isolated dual battery system to ensure long life, eliminating possibility of main battery drain

New here and not my Capri but my aunt's 91 XR2 in of course red. I've been knocking out a bunch of little stuff on it in my garage over the past few weeks....

wash/clay/buff/wax to get the oxidation off the red paint (again!)
put some stuff to help rejuvinate the soft top, looks better but should be replaced
blacked out the gray trim that runs around the belt line of the car so it pops against the red body
re-wired the headlights with a built by me relay harness with 4 relays and it's own fuse block
replaced the headlights with Hella H4 conversion housings
repaired the headlight switch so it actually works every time
reconditioned the D/S headlight motor so it works correctly (thanks to info here!)
repaired the pass side power lock pivot and stuck lock cylinder
replacing the water damaged OEM front speakers with something less water damage prone (cheap kenwoods)
painted the headlight bezels satin black (plastic was oxidized)
painted the side mirrors satin black (grabbed the wrong rag and wiped one with acetone!)
replaced the front marker bulbs with some small warm white LED's that I had to glue in because the sockets have gone rotten
added a trunk light that actually lights the trunk (8W COB LED strip)
replaced the trunk lifts
replaced the burnt out headlight switch illumination bulb with a 5mm green LED (had to sharpie the nose to dim it down some)

I'm probably forgetting something, kinda cheating as this has been over the past few weeks not a day but still...post worthy.

Picked up a new one in Long Island, NY.  Two owners from new, certified 60K, loaded, includes window sheet, maintenance records, white ZR2.  The jack is still shiny.  Has some of the normal old Capri problems, but most things still work  Got home at 1:00AM, pics to follow.

Saturday took my 93 for what was probably the last top down beer/grocery run of the season.  Hardtop goes on over turkey day weekend.

Well not today but yesterday I bought a 1994 with 88,000 miles on it! Oh did I mention it's a XR2😮. It's in good shape with a matching hard top. The real question is what is worth?

I spent all of Saturday installing the o-ring in the water bypass pipe which connects into the side of the water pump - it is a major leak when the o-ring fails (it was hard and crispy with bits crumbling) - I did manage to do this without removing the exhaust manifold - I could just reach in to get a new O-ring (which are hard to find by the way) on the end of the pipe - that did mean removal of various things at the distributor end of the engine....the fun was putting it all back together without any bits leftover...haha

So far successful - no leaks from a couple of test runs -weather was not good enough for a road test yet so we will see how we go......

Oh - I also removed the A/C compressor as the system is not working and don't need it on this one - I do want to swap it on a 93 model (from the 91 model) - does anyone know off hand if the compressors are the same (i.e plug n play)? - haven't had a chance to look at the 93 one yet (it has a compressor leak).

Friday night I stopped by the fabric store and picked up $20 worth of headliner material for the hard top. Saturday I removed the headliner, tore the fabric off of the fiberboard, scrubbed what was left of the foam off and patched it a few places with fiberglass. Then I went out in the garage and took the sawsall to the car...

Not to worry - I just cut the 4x6 speakers out and put in some 3way 40 OZ magnet 6x9's. Now I can probably hear the tunes with the top down. Only problem is that I won't have the top down for a while.

Today I washed the chrome wheels and put the summer tires, wheels on the rack - slapped the snows with stock 94 5 spokers on since it snowed 3 inched today. Finished gluing and reinstalling the new headliner and put the hardtop on for the long winter slop.

Thinking about taking the car to the mechanic. My two attempts (in the last 3 weeks) at replacing the oil pan gasket and front crank seal have not succeeded. Either I need a repair sleeve, or it's the oil pump gasket. Boy it leaks about a quart in 1000 mi!

Just got back from the store I spent 100 bucks so I can wash and detail my car for the first time properly, before I was only washing it. When its done ill post pics.  The reason I havent posted pics yet is because it looks awful.

Replaced the stock 14" wheels and 185/65 tires with a set of 15" Kia wheels I found off Craig's List.  Tires are 195/60s, new black acorn lug nuts, left the black Kia center caps on (didn't look right without them).  Very little clearance on the back under the spring perches, but hey, if it clears by a mm, it clears by a mile!

BEFORE

AFTER

This was the first time I went to use my small jack on the car since the H&R springs were installed, and low and behold, it wouldn't fit under the car from the side, lol!  So I turned the front wheels all the way to one side, and that gave me enough room to slide the jack underneath to reach the frame.  The rear wheels went up just fine.  Results look pretty decent, took away some of the fenderwell gap, and filled out the space more.  Has a good stance now!

Looks great, I'd go for that.  What year were they from?  You can get Mercury decals from Russ to cover the center caps.

Well after much anticipation, the front struts were finally replaced after 322000 km - yes they were still the factory installed struts...!!  (ford logos on the struts) - also new strut mounts to stop the creaking from the broken one.....
