I'm doing a manual transmission flush and refilling it with synthetic 75w 90 gear oil instead of the atf that is so thin it seems so have started making my gears whine more and more. Hopefully the gear oil will solve that problem.

What a coincidence, doing that with Pennzoil Synchromesh on Friday myself!

Discovered why my transmission went out a couple of weeks ago.  No transmission fluid after the clutch was replaced a week before that.  Mechanic wouldn't accept any responsibility for the dry transmission.  We're going to talk about it again next week.  I got two quarts of Synchromesh to fill the new transmission when they get it in.

He doesn't want to admit it because it costs him $$. You pull the axles fluid comes out. If for some unknown mystery it was dry before its still his job to top the tranny fluid off. If there was a leak afterwards it was from a damaged axle seal. There's no way around it he screwed up. He needs to suck in his pride and man up.

Good luck with that. I had a mechanic replace the rack only to have the power steering pump fail 10 miles later (which we both know was because they didn't fill the system properly). They put in another pump and that one failed two weeks later along with the 'new' rack. That was back in the first week of April. It's about to be July and I'm still trying to get them to pay up. They both refuse to admit it was their fault and refuse to reimburse me.

As for the two quarts, according to the service manual for the G-series transmission the capacity is 3.4 quarts.

My service manual for the F series transmissions has the oil capacity as 2.83 quarts.

Funny you mention that, they replaced the axle seal because they were afraid they might leak.

All this transmission talk.  I'm doing the 5th gear conversion today.  Can't wait to try it out.  I'll make sure my tranny is full of gear oil before I drive it.

Just took the XR2 out for a test drive on the new 5th gear set.  That's the best mod I've done so far.  Much nicer at highway speeds.  75 mph at 3200 RPM.

Just replaced the valve cover gasket and all that, time to let 'er sit while the RTV cures so I can finish reassembly and get back to driving.

One weird thing, though. I took the car to Mazda to have them do the manual transmission flush. I gave them 4 quarts of Pennzoil Synchromesh. They gave me back 2.5 quarts. The transaxle capacity is listed at 3.4 quarts in the service manual. Uh...what? ???

I'd be asking them why?? Something isn't right there.

Why didn't you just buy a valve cover gasket set?

I did. You still use RTV on a few of the corners, or at least the factory sure did.
