How do you reduce weight?
« on: August 07, 2010, 01:26:00 AM »

I want to get rid of as much weight on this car as possible without ripping out seats etc. Lighter wheels are a start, don't want to get rid of electric windows. Headlights are a pain so motors out and something low profile and permanent is possible. Rear lights may go but I don't know how much they weigh. Any & all suggestions are welcome.

are you runnuing a turbo car?? if your trying to make it faster, that alone is the single best upgrade you can make. Then you can 'tune' it up, pardon the 'tuner' thing... ha

Yeah it's a turbo, has a lot of miles but i know the owner before the guy I bought it from did @ least a job on the heads-I think more though. The last guy just let it sit for a few years besides short drives to keep it decently running. I am going to get it up to speed though, but there has to be a way to shed some weight. Those doors are monsters. I could get ahold of some titanium and a little carbon fiber pretty cheap, but that's not nearl enough. If I could figure out the headlights that'll free up a lot of room to configure the engine like boxed intake. Thinking suspension 1st, weight 2nd, then speed.

They just don't make off the shelf engine upgrades that I've found without self modification. I was able to get racing pistons & better cams for a 71 alpha. Ragtops just weigh!

Work on getting everything refreshed first, if the car handles like a pig then there is something wrong. These things only weigh 2400lbs bone stock.

Grab a front strut tower bar. that alone will help the car handle much better. Look into lowering it, and refreshing the suspension.

As for weight reduction:

Honestly the headlights don't weight much. Remove the a/c, thats a decent chunk of weight. Joe (rcicustoms) removed his inner bumpers and is running just the skins. The bumpers are very heavy, and they are also the parts furthest out from the center of the car.

listen to this guy up there, he knows his shit, he also makes the "rocket-chip", which most of us run, that alone will let you up the boost, then exhaust, then intake, then... well you know!

I know he does, I found him a week or two ago when looking for that chip. I was just looking @ that bumber before I read that & I think you're right on the $. I never use the A/C either, slows'em down too much. Another good one. Since I've had this about a mo. or so Ive done most of the susp. except those stupid control arm bushings. The lights are just a pain, I've taken one apart 3 times now to get it to ride smooth. Neither worked when I bought it. Going in for an alignment even though I'll have too do it again after bushings & tires. Fixed the turbo-not bolted right but looks like the rebuilder before did a good job. If there's anytime to start choppin' metal out its now, hence the headlight idea-& weld the coverings as one complete hood. Can never get close to what goes in to these so it's all for fun. Thanks you guys.

Oh yeah, just before starting this thread I posted somewhere that they even make fake bumpers for old Rabbits-hence the thread-stock weighed 70 lbs. I'm gettin' that monster white chunk out of mine. I'm gonna have fun with this but done wrong & it's a huge $$$ pit.

I've done some weight loss tricks on my 91 n/a.
1)remove all of the a/c components
2)install manual R&P from 89 tracer and remove all p/s components
3)remove all unnecessary brackets,plastic shields,wiring etc...
4)I honeycombed my inner bumper structures to shed weight but retain strength using a hole saw
5)install lighter wheels
6)install lighter seats. ours are rather hefty.
7) remove cast iron manifold and install tubed header.
These are just a few helpful hints. Good luck!

heres what i have taken out of mine...

front and rear bumpers..dangerous dont wreck it...
rear seats and all brackets...
 seatbelts f&r...
everything from the trunk..everything....
(then put the batt in there...)
a/c and all related...
ps and all related...
cruise controll and all related...
airbags and all sensors and brackets...
some sound deadening material...
stock radiator for aluminum unit...
the intake mani bracket from back of the engine..
the steel bracket that holds up the stock turbo..
(couldnt use it with the big turbo im running anyway)
lighter seats...
team 5 zigen wheels @ 15 lbs apiece...

do not remove top... the soft top is lighter than the hardtop, and without a top at all, you lose three tenths in the 1/4 due to extra wind drag.. (car is faster with the top up)

ill think of more i have done ...

im at 2100 lbs and i weigh 150lbs 2250 me and a full tank of gas...
problem i have found is that with all the weight gone, it has made the car very stiff and unforgiving over any kind of bump... it hurts to drive to the gatherings... it beats the shit out of you..                   Joe..RCIcustoms

I love you guys.

Removed all that didn't belong.
got boxes of shit that once belonged.
Got boxes of shit I forgot where went.
Got pictures of shit I forgot where went.
Still no answer on how the car handles with no power steering.
I'd take off the freakin' exhaust if I could get away with it!!!
Made my old lady diet.
kept the seats, I like em.

So far I see a simple & safe 150 lbs. loss just from all the input. I'd also like to know about that header. Great information!

theres a guy on ebay that will build one 4 U for under $$800 to fit any turbo you want to bolt up to it. I had put in "88 mazda 323 turbo" or B6T turbo will also get you some results, that you won't normally find looking under the standard "91 - 94 mercury capri". Play around with ebay and you woill find shit that normally you might not. I had found the same header on a web site but for $100 more. I'll let you know, as soon as I decide on which turbo to buy, then i will be spending the money on a header system.
