Hello all from illinois
« on: September 01, 2012, 03:02:00 PM »

Hello everyone, my names Matt. I recently bought a 91 mercury Capri xr2 5 speed. It is currently not running. It has no spark and the injectors are not firing. So I recently ordered a ecu from a junk yard and am waiting for it.

Anyways a little about my car. It's a two owner, power windows. Its doesn't have the steel hard top though. But its been garage kept its whole life.

I think it should be a fun project.

Welcome to TeamCapri Matt!

Regarding your no spark/fuel: It's usually not the ECU, the ignitor module in the distributor fails and won't provide a tach signal to the ECU to fire the coil or injectors. It's a very well documented problem - have a search around the forum here for "ignitor module" for more info. It could also be the ground on the thermostat housing - a faulty ground there will cause a no-spark/fuel condition as well.

Good luck with her - you've come to the right place for any info & help you might need!

Hi Matt,

You've joined the right group for information on Capri's.

Matt aka Rocketman probably has more information and expertise on the Capri than the so called "authorized Ford/Mercury" mechanics ever had.

Good luck with your project, dam things are addictive.  We have 2 and are always looking.

Hmm, Check the ground on the thermostat housing - if that or the ECU don't fix it, look into the knockbox. The knockbox has a lot to do with the spark on the XR2 - if it's unplugged or malfunctioning you won't get spark either

Where would the ground on the thermostat housing be at? There is only one wire going to that and it looks like its the coolant temp sensor wire? and where would the knockbox be located?

There should be a bracket on top of the t-stat housing, it will have one 10mm bolt with several ground wires attached

Here's the location:

The knockbox is a black box on the passenger side, right in front of the strut tower. It has a long cable that snakes around and plugs into the main engine harness on the firewall with a round black plug

the ground is connected and looks good. So I'm guessing that the ecu is really out of it. I was told by the previous owner that it was bad.

Gotta ask where in the Quad Cities?

I was born and raised in Erie and lived in Hampton for 15 years before moving east.
