my Capri ('94 N/A)
« on: July 10, 2014, 06:41:14 PM »

driving my Saabs 9000 for several years now, i thought it would be fun to have a convertible as well. logicly it would be a Saab 9³ or NG900. but as we pay road tax based on the weight of the car and the 'verts being quite heavy (1400kg) a Saab 'vert was not an option. so i decided to look for something french, like the Renault Mégane or the Peugeot 306. i found a Mégane, with all bells and wistles (dark brown metallic, leather upholstery, electric roof+windows), but it had a rotten engine. it would take 1700 euros/ $3k to have it fixed. no-go, so it went out the door.

some weeks later i saw on the Dutch Mercury Capri Owners Facebook-page a message that there was a Capri for sale in the south of my country, for only € 500. the seller told me it needed a new tire, a new radiator and the car faild the annual test, because of the exhaust fumes. after having fixed the leak (the hose from the intake manifold to the IAC-valve was torn) i still have to replace the catalytic converter. after having seen how the cat was fitted under the car, i knew it wasn't the original one. i was able to buy a 2nd hand cat from a Peugeot 1.8L and that one will be fitted under the car next week.

this morning i got a phone call from the technician, so i went to see him.

here's the situation:
the present (Calif-style)catalyst is empty (...) that's why it didn't meet the required CO. the catalyst i brought him doesn't fit. to make it fit it takes a lot of welding and trying.. so now he will put another (universal) catalyst and he'll weld the front end of the present catalyst onto the new one to fit to the downpipe. the other end will be made to measure to the exhaust in such a way that if the exhaust is rotten, it can easily be fitted onto the catalyst (but not according to how it should be, with nuts and bolts and what-have-you). so that'll be some €250-300ish to have it fixed.  but it keeps the girl on the road!

My Capri has a 4-2-1 header, a fake cat, 2 1/4"exhaust all the way back with a cherry bomb glass pack an turbo muffler an passes PA emission better than it did all stock.

Sceeter, where did you get teh header made? Is it a tuned header? Post some pics.

I think Sceeter has one of the pacesetter headers that was made for a short time 'back in the day'. There was a seller on eBay with them, they were blue (maybe it wasn't pacesetter?) haven't seen one for sale in 6-7 years now.

i just got the message from my mechanic: my Capri passed the annual test, after replacing the converter. it sets me back about 500 dollar (€325), but she's roadworthy again!

I can see it, it looks like it's hosted on facebook though which will cause some people to not see it. I'd recommend Photobucket or Imgur

Looks good out in the wild, hope you're enjoying driving it!

some (more) pics of my Capri. these were taken close to the military complex where the MH17 victims were transported to. it's on the border of the Provinces North-Holland and Utrecht.

the Capri is parked in the Province of Utrecht, the other side of the road is in the Province of North-Holland, and is gouverned by the city council of Hilversum (about 5 miles away)

i have to say: it's (still) fun to drive!

what i learned from the initiator of the Mercury Capri club The Netherlands, there are 68 Capri's (ex. turbo), from which  only 3 are reef green.

only the red one (YT-34-KB) was delivered new into the Netherlands in 1991. the other red one was imported in 1994, and mine was imported in 1999.

to give you an idea of what a Capri sells for: the owner of the YT-34-KB bought the car in 2003 for a whopping € 6,800.-, which is to todays rate close to or over $ 10k. whereas mine was €3k last year, but i bought it for € 500.- a few weeks ago. but i have to admit: it needed some work: new catalyst, new tyre. further more the seller needed 'fast cash', and didn't want to invest in the car anymore.
