Belt squeal
« on: May 28, 2014, 10:46:03 AM »

My belt squeals under load at low rpm's. Especially when lights are on and cooling fan kicks on. Any ideas on what it could be before I try to start pinpointing it myself?

Most likely a worn or incorrectly sized alternator belt.  Its not at all uncommon on these cars.

The squeal is caused because the alternator is pulling harder at start up and when electrical system is under load.  You may want to check your battery too as it may not be holding enough charge and therefore requiring the alternator to work more/longer.  In all events, you want to go ahead and check and (if necessary) replace the alt belt because it also drives the water pump and if it breaks, you could overheat the engine.  (learn from my mistake - i just had this happen a few weeks ago).

From my Exp when my belt started squealing was from the harmonic balancer so check to see if you have a massive wobble from that as well

Always good to check for wobble but these belts really are an issue, on almost every Capri I've owned/touched.

This past year the harmonic balancers started becoming an issue for folks, I think they've hit a critical age where they start deteriorating

The belts are a common issue. It seems to be "usually" caused by someone replacing the alternator with a cheaper, "autozone" type alternator. The pulleys on the replacement alternator are the wrong size, and this causes your belts to squeal, or break within days.
We have a replacement belt available that fixes this issue 99.9% of the time. You can call us at 503-919-4227 and order one direct, or we also have them listed on ebay:

Mark - Just let me know if you think you'll need a belt!

Again, I apologize for the HUGE delay in getting that pod out...

Hi,
i have also the problem with the noisy belt. i change belt, new alternator bearings and also the pully from the alternator. My last hope is that the hamronic balancer is out of tolerance. Iproble is that i donīt find i new one... have somebody a hint for me where to buy. I try rockauto.com, but i donīt find it there. My Capri is from 1994 with the N/A 1,6 Motor and Automatic gearbox.
Thanks for help
