89 323 Gas Tank the Same?
« on: May 25, 2014, 04:10:49 PM »

Was searching for some tips and saw that someone posted that gas tanks were the same...  True?  I have a leak I have been chasing for about a year and I am 99% sure its the tank.  Rock auto doesn't seem to carry a tank for a Capri, but they do for a 89 323.

'91 N/A 5 speed.

Thanks again guys.  I still owe you picture from my brake and bearing boondoggle.

Congrats on the buy, if you are a do-it-your-selfer, then the car will work out good for you.

Our Capri shares many parts with the 1989 Mazda 323, and lots of folks sell Mazda distributor o-rings, should work OK.

You will find many parts for the 1989 Mazda 323 that will work on the Capri (like the gas tank), but many folks (like Autozone) don't cross reference it into the Capri.

Are you sure it's the o-ring?  Valve cover gasket would leak more than an o-ring, and its right there at the distributor...Chris

This why I am asking...

They sure do  look close...

Capri:
12 gal. 37.77" x25.25" x8.5"
http://m.ebay.com/itm/231236967406?nav=SEARCH

323:
13 gal. 31.88"x25.75" x8.5"
http://m.ebay.com/itm/370728211004?nav=SEARCH

Weird the Capri has bigger listed demensions but the 323 holds more?  I'm not sure I can rely heavily on these measurements.  Does seem pretty close though.

I read somewhere that the one from the 323 will fit but there's a vent or something that's a little different. Couldn't tell you exactly.

The one from the 323 should be the same size & capacity as the Capri. Should be an 11 gallon tank

I don't trust those measurements one bit.

Thanks.  I guess I have a choice.  The Ebay special, or the better quality 323 tank and hope there isn't much difference.  Anyone running an Ebay tank?  How did the install go?  Fitment?

Rocket is correct: We do carry replacement tanks! They also come with a new fuel pump gasket, as well.

That first ebay link I bought that tank since mine was rusted out. Shipping was great. I think I got it in 4 days, maybe 5. I've bought so many online parts lately I forgot! :)

They look the same which I thought until I got them side by side. There is one minor shape change which is no big deal at all. The bolt mount holes and hose connections are all exactly the same. The tank is well built and a worthy replacement. They include the pump assembly gasket and screws.

There was only one flaw but again no big deal. The factory tank has a little 2-3" strap crimped to on corner where you can mount the roll over vent to with one bolt hole. The replacement tank is missing that little mount. The rollover vent with two hoses and an electrical connection will freely hang right beside it. It doesn't fall and drag the ground or anything. I took a cable tie and secured it just to be sure. Just make sure it's upright so it doesn't think you flipped over. :)

Also the factory tank has three strips of foam glued to the top which the new tank doesn't have. I'm not sure their purpose. Either it's to keep metal to metal noises down or it's a little spacer to keep your top hoses from being crushed. They aren't an 1/8th inch thick. I think they are more of a cushion. I forgot to transfer them over and had no issues. You would need something like 3M weatherstrip adhesive to make a permanent bond as the old ones just fell off to the ground. I blew through the return line with no problems so I didn't worry anymore.

Sorry Russ, I didn't mean to step on any toes. I didn't see your post until after I posted the last one. :)

I see you are from Roo-Sports. Great site! I learned some valuable info from there. Your info helped me fix my oil pressure gauge. Thanks a bunch for that. I plan on buying a lower radiator hose from you since you are the only one that has one! I'm going to sit on that baby! :)

That is the review and info I was looking.  Thank you very much!  Russ does has some great products and top notch quality.  I am working on a $500 beater.  I just need something to get me a year...  Next spring is new car time and I am looking to get a new impreza...  If they ever take care of their little oil burn issue.

The 323 fuel tank fits the Capri, the dimensions listed for the Capri tank are wrong. I measured the fuel tank on my car and it's roughly 32"X26"X8.5", so I decided to chance it and ordered the one from the second link for the 323. I recieved it in two days and it's exactly the same as the tank Mitch1204 described in his post. It came with a gasket and new screws, it's a perfect fit except for the missing vent bracket on the back corner.

I realize this thread is 5+ years old but Im in need of a replacement fuel tank for my 1994 N/A Mercury Capri.  I found a tank on EBAY for a 86-89 MAZDA 323 (round) listed for $90.  Will this tank work???  Thanks.

I'd get a part number to verify the fit... Autozone sells one for like $105...
