Driver door won't stay open
« on: May 01, 2014, 06:23:31 PM »

I finally pulled my Capri out of storage.  Yea!  As I've been cleaning it and getting the interior ready, the driver door won't stay open.  It slowly drifts closed.  Is there a way to fix this?

The door check is probably shot. Mine are worn out, I grabbed a better set from the junkyard but I havent put them in yet

^^What he said! Mine are worn out, too. Not on my list of priorities, so I just deal with.

Thanks.  Is the door check a metal piece that has to be welded or is it a plastic piece that I could find somewhere and easily replace?

It's a piece that bolts into the door itself, you have to remove the panel to remove it. If you open the door and look you'll see a small piece connected to the door jam with a roll pin for a pivot, that's the door check. The workings of it are inside the door itself.

It's a specially formed piece, I don't know of any ways of fixing it.

What are the chances that any of you are still interested in this thread???

I just became the proud owner of a '91 Base, and I want to replace the door checks on both sides. In just about any other vehicle, this is a straightforward thing: find the replacement part online, buy it, install it. Not so, it seems, in this case.

I've spent two days exploring the web, hoping to find new aftermarket door checks for this vehicle--or parts for another vehicle that are close enough to swap. No joy.

Anyone got ideas? I don't want to rely on junkyard parts in this case: door checks wear out after 25 years, pure and simple. A part from a junkyard is not likely to be substantially better.

Both my cars have the same problem and the XR2 only have 63K.
