Any good muffler & tailpipe kits?
« on: March 28, 2014, 11:12:51 PM »

I'd like to replace my muffler with a slightly louder/throatier/Flowmaster sound and also replace the rusty tailpipe.  I haven't been able to find a replacement other than a Walker system that is labeled "quiet flow" (not what I'm looking for).  Is there another system out there?  Or do I have to buy a muffler separately and have a muffler shop bend a custom tailpipe to fit?

There aren't any aftermarket exhausts, you're going to have to buy a muffler and have a shop install it. In the end it usually works out cheaper than it is to buy an aftermarket exhaust for other makes/models

Thanks.  How do I find one?  I've looked on the Flowmaster and Dynamax websites but nothing is available for our cars.

You'll have to measure the stock muffler (or find OE measurements online, rockauto might help?) and punch those measurements & inlet/outlet configurations in and see what pops up.

I'd recommend going to a slightly larger pipe as an upgrade

Dynomax turbo muffler 2" inlet/outlet w/offset outlet, sounds sick on this car. Noticeably louder than factory without being obnoxious. I have no cat.

What size is the current exhaust?  2"?  If I go with a slight larger pipe (2.5", I guess), where does this start?  After the exhaust (tailpipe) or before the exhaust?

In a perfect world you'd want to replace every bit of pipe on the car to open it up.

Most folks go for a Cat-Back exhaust to start. The stock exhaust is 1 7/8" OD IIRC, not even 2"

2" ID would be a upgrade. I would NOT do 2.5" on a non-turbo engine. It'll be too loud, and you'll notice a loss of power. Mandrel bent piping is ideal but most shops don't have a bender, personally I buy mandrel bends online and then piece my systems together.

Once you do a cat-back, you can upgrade the downpipe and get a high-flow cat (or delete the cat if your locality doesn't have emissions) Some folks do this all at once, depends on your budget.

Thank you.  Is the resonator reused if you do a cat-back upgrade of do you just get a shop to install a 2" ID pipe from the cat to the new muffler?

Reed - do you have a resonator?

You can use a new resonator or just do without. Most I've seen do without

I just got a quote of $1,200 to do complete exhaust system replacement.  Seems a bit stout to me.  For that $$ I may learn how to weld.

That sounds about right for a custom mandrel bent TIG welded stainless steel system with premium everything... it shouldn't run much more than $250-300 for a generic mild steel system. Shop around some more :D

I picked up a cheap welder & started welding my own exhaust systems, I buy mandrel bends online. Works for me

I figured something north of $200 and south of $300 was to be expected.  I have to have a cat, but it looks like even those can be had for $50.  Glasspack.  should be able to do something in the $250 neighborhood.

Thanks once more for your insights/help.
