Strange pulsation...
« on: May 22, 2011, 04:30:00 AM »

Hey folks. I have acquired an annoying pulsating sound coming from the rear of my 91 XR2. It isn't grinding or squealing, more of a whoomp, whoomp, whoomp sound. LOL Only happens at speeds above about 55. Car coasts, starts and stops fine. No squealing brakes. Just that annoying and loud pulsation. Could it be a tire out of balance? Maybe the alignment is off? Bearings? What say you all?

Thanks!!

Jack up the rear, kick the tires.  If they wobble, tighten the lugs down to proper torque.  If they still wobble it's bearings.

....hahahaha what???

Anyways Tony:

Being that it only happens above 55 leads be to believe it's not bearings, but can't rule it out. See if there's anything wrong with the tire, are they new? Maybe a cord or something popped inside the tire, I've had that happen before, made a terrible noise.

To check rear bearings: jack up the rear and slowly rotate the wheels. Does it sounds crunchy? Does the wheel move inconsistently? If you firmly grab the wheel, and "shake" it, can you detect any play?

I seen that wobble noise happen when breaking & turning at the same time. Was the bearings.

+1 for the bearings as the possible problem. If they feel strong then rotate the tires and see if you feel something coming from the front.

Thanks guys, I will check all that. Had the car up on stands yesterday and the tires didn't wobble, but the brake pads are rubbing the top edge of the rotors a little. Pretty new pads, not sure if that is normal or not.

Are the rear bearings as much of a pain to swap as the front or is the procedure the same?

More so a pain. There is a bearing race pressed on the spindle, and I suspect it would be very difficult to do on-car, if it's at all possible. Which means tearing down the entire rear end to bring somewhere. A bearing separator & gear puller together might work, though, if you're willing to tackle it. The rotor acts as part of the hub, some of the bearings get pressed into the rotor itself.

Wonderful, they sure make it look easy in the FSM!!

I don't know if I can tackle that with my limited knowledge. If that turns out to be the problem, looks like I'll be taking her to the shop. ARGH, I hate to think about how much that will cost.

If you pull the hubs your self & take them to a shop, you will save a bunch. I had a shop here do both front bearings for $100 & that included the seals & bearings.

My girls Capri had that problem and it turned out to be a tire, sometimes the belt in the tire decides to move due to age or bad workmanship anywho u can't see it from the outside put on a couple of known good tires and try it or have them placed on a balancer

Just got the rear tires balanced and the pulsing is better, but now I am sure I should do the front ones as well. Gotta get new tires soon anyway. Another thing for after the Florida trip!

Does it occur under ALL loads at 55, or just heavier loads.  If it's under load, aka foot more then halfway down it could be the inner CV joints.

CV joints would not make noise in the rear of the car

Well, I had all 4 tires balanced, tried swapping front to rear and no change, so I put them back where there were. Now the pulsation is HORRIBLE at 65 MPH. I mean it sounds like the whole car is going to explode. I can hear the pulsing at any speed above 40, but it gets REALLY bad at 65, then quiets down a little at 70 and above. I can't honestly say for sure at this point if the problem is the rear. Could this be caused by the CV axles? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks for all the previous input.
