A two inch water hose which can ruin your day
« on: February 03, 2014, 10:48:45 PM »

Today was almost a day from hell, and ended with dodging a huge bullet.

As I drove to an appointment, after filling with fuel, steam was coming from under the hood less than 5 miles later. I found a place to pull over in an office parking lot. Water reservoir was empty. Got the radiator cap removed using a section of the LA Times (best use). Radiator seemed low. I kept a container of 50/50 anti-freeze in the trunk, and poured some into the radiator. Steam came out, and also came out of a place under the distributor. Was it my head gasket?  Hello tow truck.
My mechanic looked at it, and found a two inch piece of hose located under the distributor which had a bubble. We poured water into the radiator and water flowed out the hose.
Thankfully all I had to do was replace the two inch hose  by removing the battery to reach the hose. You cannot get to it unless the battery is out. You might want to remove the distributor you need more room.
If you are replacing hoses, replace this one. It might save you a huge headache.

yeah, jim.
i bought my capri na 4years ago.
in 2010, after about 6mo of long distance driving, twice a week, i started blowing all kinds of hoses.
i guess they just all got tired around the same period of time.. it was JUL and AUG, though.
for about 4 weeks, it seemed i was blowing a hose about every 7 days.

Those little guys can be a pain. And some of them are stuffed into real tight places.

I've made a habit of replacing them whenever I have easy enough access.

Luckily yours was nothing too major, and you didn't let it overheat into a head gasket repair!

You guys know the fear you feel when you see steam, and smell the smell.

I would not want anyone else to feel that feeling again. Change those hoses.

Matt, there seems to be another hose from the block to the firewall. Does that hose go thru the wall and attach to the heater core under the dash?

Theres another small line that routes from the bottom of the intake manifold, to the idle valve. And from there to the throttlebody, then back to the metal bypass tube right near that 2" one you just replaced. When replacing this line I usually bypass the throttlebody.

There are thicker (5/8" i think)lines that run to &from the heater core, and there's an oil cooler tied in there as well.

And you also have the small preformed lines that supply water to &from the turbo, These guys see a lot of heat.

Whats the best solution for replacing the turbo coolant lines? Can you buy the prebent tubes still or do you have to come uo with something ...new..?

Preform lines can be had from Mazda, I usually end up using trans cooler line. You have to be careful with it though as it will want to kink, so gotta give it some room

Blew my turbo coolant line this weekend.  Anyone know a part number?  Having a hard time finding or can you make one yourself?

Not sure on the size I've just matched it up in the past
