My car is a 91 XR2. My mechanic replaced the rear brakes about 6 months or so ago. He showed me that the brake pads (two on each wheel) are supposed to have metal shims on either side of each pad, totalling 8 for both wheels. I had one shim on either side. One of our members has 4 shims, and I am ready to get this job finished. There are a couple of issues (questions) which our super intelligent group members can answer. I need your help.
Do the shims do more than dampen vibration? Do they help keep the pads from sliding, or squealing? Will the 91 fit the 92-93 brakes? I have a horrible squeal from the rear when I back out of a space, usually in morning.
Will the shims make a difference?
