Hello! Newbie here
« on: October 16, 2013, 03:04:38 PM »

Hi folks! I just purchased my new (to me) Capri.  I had one once before and regretted getting rid of it for a long time. My car is a 94 XR2, grey with black interior.  I will post some pics when I get them.

I have a few questions. Of the 366 94 XR2s made, how do I know which number mine is? Also, the plastic window is coming out of the top; pulled loose. The rest of the top is great. Can I somehow get a replacement window and re-glue or install with a ring around it with screws (I saw a video where they did this exact thing on a Miata).

Thanks!

Welcome to TeamCapri and congratulations on finding a 94XR2! A treasure for sure. It's grey?

Russ (CapriTypeR) has a master list of the 94XR2 VIN's, he'll need your VIN to check which number it is.

I've seen a few window repairs, but I haven't seen anyone do a writeup, there are no kits for it. You can buy the window material, it's pretty inexpensive. I've heard that glue + stitching is the best way to go, glue alone won't hold.

Glue first and then hand stitch?  I'd think I could glue one side first, let it dry, then glue the other side so I can stretch it, then top and bottom. Finish with stitches?

Not sure honestly. I would think release the top and do the repairs without any tension on it so it's pulled taut when you latch it..

I had read & found a few writeups for the Miata, that's probably your best bet to go for info on stitching and adhesive type

Good idea. I love these cars, and this one is a blast to drive. I'm a VW guy too, so I like little cars even though i'm a big guy and have to put them on instead of get in them... :) ;D

I would abandon the window repair idea, and just get a new top. They are relatively inexpensive, and a new top dramatically changes the look of your car!

I can get you your production build numbers, but I would need the last 5 digits of your VIN number. Congratulations on owning the rarest of the the rare Capris!

That would be great! The last 5 digits of the VIN are 01866.

The whole number if you need it is 6MPLT0363R8601866.

Here's one of the how-to's I found: http://www.miata.net/garage/rear_window/

Considerably cheaper and "easier" than replacing the whole top IMO

Great find! I'm certainly going to try to replace the window first, and if it doesn't work I'll get a new top. It appears these tops are relatively easy to install (as far as convertible tops go).  Any opinions?

I've done one before, and have another one in a box that needs to get done, it'll probably get done come spring now. Set aside a solid day for it, you'll want a relatively warm & sunny day to help the vinyl stretch (unless you opt for the canvas top) Maybe two days if you want. Figure 8-12 hours actual work time

I'm hoping to do mine in the Spring as well if needed.

I'll be doing a comprehensive write-up on mine whenever it does get done. The last one I did was in 2008 and I can't really remember all the finer details of it. I'm young but my memory isn't the greatest when it comes to some of these things  :-\
