210's......
« on: May 21, 2006, 02:32:00 PM »

Ok I have 205/50/15's on my car now.... However I was just thinking..since I did my brake upgrade they bulge out a little bit because the thick rotors give me a little bit of offset. They say its 7mm of offset. I think I can probably fit 210's up front now. Can anyone that's tried to fit 210's on a stock one tell me how much of a clearance issue it was?

are you referring to tire sizes? 210 is not a valid width, 215 is the next step up, and the backspacing should not be a problem since you've added 7mm of hub distance and are adding only 5mm of tire width from the hub to the strut(10mm increase/2).

Yeah I just realized that well searching for tire sizes...hmm I could have sworn i'd seen 210's before...anyways... I was searching a little while after I posted this and someoen said they had put 215's up front with no problems..they put 215's in the back too and they said they had to use spacers. I wouldn't mind putting spacers in the back because the back of the car is so light anyways. I wouldn't do it up front though..too much strain on the front bearings. If i could fit 215's all around that would be nice. It'd be nice to have that extra width around corners and taking off and now stopping too with my new brakes..It's way too easy to lock them up.

Gentlemen, a quick question.
If due to your brake upgrade increasing track 7mm increasing tyre width should be ok but would you also need to reduce wheel offset to avoid your wheels sticking out of the guard?
I have the stock brake setup but running 205/45/R16. At the moment they sit flush with the guards and no scrubbing in the wheel well (wheel arch is a different matter!)
Increasing track will definitely sit the wheels out of the arch.
Is there anything I can do without going to the extent of purchasing new rims?

Find a fender roller. Use a heat gun to keep the paint frmo cracking and go to town.  research all the stuff the aggressive fitment crowd uses to fit their wheels and tires. Or just go budget baller and pound your fenders out with a hammer until they clear...

Not really keen on bending the original panels but it looks like the only real solution. I haven't asked anyone before but maybe I can reduce the offset of my wheels. That's probably a worse idea since the rims are structural...

Hey Guys! When I was a youngster, we would place a ball bat between the fender lip and tire; then gentl pull out while rolling the bat back and forth. That would eventually flare out the fender. In extreme cases we fabricated flare pieces from cardboard into the look we wanted then duplicated in steel and welded in place. A little grinding and bondo and then ready for paint. I was involved in numerous cars including my pinto and my brother's '68 mustang fastback, which we both auto-crossed for a few years.  Gus

yen,

you should know better, being that you live in sydney also, any rim that sticks out of a guard is suicide for getting a nice "defect" slapped upon you. Police here even go by the millimetre on this one... keep well away from excessive wide rims...

Hey Spiro,
Yeah tell me about it!
Truth of the matter is that if your car is modified in any way it can be deemed defectable. Issuing Canary's (defect notices) is at the discression of the officer. I've known people who've been defected for upgraded brake, clutch and accelerator pedals, and upgraded as in later model OEM!
Rim's were very hard to find for the Capri. Apparently 4x114 is predominantly a RWD stud pattern. My brother has the opposite problem, he has 4x100 on a MR2. The only other rims that suit are off an MX5.

ive got 205/40 17" on my car, no clearance issues at the front, but the rears were rubbing on the strut. I used spacers, this in turn made the outside tread rub on the wheel arch during hard cornering. I used a rubber mallet to gently fold in the lip on the inside of the rear guards.

cant tell anything has changed unless you stick your head under the back of the car but its stopped the rubbing.
