brake upgrade problem.
« on: September 19, 2006, 10:40:00 AM »

hey guys!
I recently inquired about upgradng the brakes on my 91 n/a capri with the popular vr4 galant rotors etc...I gathered all the parts and did a trial fit before removing the axles and hub.as it turns out,the conversion will not fit the n/a because the spindles are made different.the xr2 already has 10" rotors where the n/a's have 9.3" rotors.the new "14-22v" calipers have no more clearance than the stock ones do when bolted to the n/a spindles, therefore in order to upgrade you will the spindle assemblies from a donor xr2 with the 10" backing plates.this also poses the question of changing the splined hub from spindle to spindle so that the axle will fit properly, or if that is not possible then you will have to change transmissions,cv joints or both in order for everything to spline up.Has anyone else tried this upgrade on an n/a and found a better solution?any advice would be helpful.
                                   thanks,

Could you explain teh part you are refering to as the spindle? If you are just talking about the metal air dam just cut the damn thing off! I don't see why it wouldn't work on a n/a capri plenty of people with non-turbo 323's have done it.

Na capri & Xr2 have the same spindles/knuckles... the problem may be in the rotors you are suing. there are 3 different Galant rotors for the AWD/Turbo. 276mm. 266mm. 256mm. You want the 266mm..

this is why there is such a stink over @ mazda323performance.com about the upgrade being a Galant upgrade not a VR4 upgrade. if you request rotors for the VR4 you will usually get the 276mm's that wont fit in the 14v calipers. the 266mm sometimes dont fit.. but only need a little grinding on the inner edges of the caliper.

I have used spindles/knuckles off both for conversions of 323/tracer's that were not GT/GTX's

Thanks for the helpful info guys.I should have done more measuring and research before I posted the first one.You were right Rob,the parts place gave me the 276mm rotors instead of the 266mm ones. They also had the wrong info in their computer/catalog that claimed that the n/a capri has 9.3" rotors and the xr2 has 10" rotors.this is incorrect as apparently all capris have the same 10" rotors.I guess now all I have to do is find the time to get it done. Thanks again everybody!!

Some capri's did come with smaller rotors originally. I've pulled 9" ones off my parts car. Which was actually a 91 turbo. So i'm thinking maybe its a year that they changed them and not whether its turbo or not. I don't know really. All I know is some cars DID come with a smaller rotor.

The rotors I pulled off my 91 n/a automatic capri seem to be 10" as well, but they seem thinner. That could be due to wear or whatever else. The caliper though is definitely different, different #'s on the side and clearly smaller than the XR2 caliper

My silver XR2 is an early build model so I'll check to see if the rotors on that are different from my late 91 build XR2
