Coilovers and strut perch?
« on: October 08, 2008, 02:19:00 PM »

Hi, I've got the ground control coilovers on my car and the tokico struts, but I was wondering if anyone knew just how unsafe (if at all) it would be to cut or grind the spring perches off the struts so there wasn't all that extra lip hanging there. You know, just enough so that the coilovers had something to rest on, it seems like it would hold OK... Plus it would create some needed clearance down there.

Not my car but the same way as they mount...

Would this be OK? Probably not that much cut off but you get the idea...

Ya, that's the way most people (non-capri at least) do it. Post up pictures when it's done.

ya good luck with that. if that coilover gets lose, or warps a little, it will slide on ya. i wouldn't chance that for the world. i have 17" wheels on my car, and i used spacers to clear the perch in the rear. and i been using ground control coil overs for over 2 years. if you do it do it right, its not worth not being save.

You could always just trim it on the outside until your wheel clears, then you still have 270* of the perch to hold the collar on

The cut photo is how I put mine together. I used a large flat washer turned to 1/8" larger than the diameter of the strut body ( this gives you 1/16th" either side) and welded to a 3/4" long section of pipe. I cut all but the welded tabs of the seat off at the same height and used Polyurethane sealant to secure it in place. They have over 2k mi. of hard use on them (tried hard to break them) now and work very well. I didnt use the stock coil leingths or spring rates on mine they were soft and prone to bind when you pushed it hard into corners. I wasnt looking for the slammed look but a stabil solid spring rate.
The lack of clearence between the strut body and the very thick machined washer prevent it from sliding past the remnants of the seat and the urethane keeps everything centered. I have no noises or issues with it yet.

Meh, in the not quite 2 years I've owned my piece I've accumulated about 9.5k worth of receipts. Capris run on smoke, you open them up, the smoke escapes and they never quite work right again.  Oh well not too much longer.

Hey D22A, I bought my stuff awhile ago when tokico was having that clearance sale on the struts. For everything I payed about $500 I think.

I've already got them installed on my capri, but its been down for awhile and I'm starting to work on getting it back on the road again. I was wanting to try something like Phillip was talking about. Not cutting two sides off the perch but around the whole thing so that there was like 1/2"-1" left for the coilover part to rest on...

Yeah, it seems like these cars end up costing more to upgrade than what they were bought for...

i spent AU$1550 on my suspension

if i knew i could get coilovers and struts for U$800 then I would've bought them without hesitation.

I sent Tokico an email about the coilovers but no one bothered to reply. I thought it was poor business ethics so I went and paid retail somewhere else.

If only i had a contact in the states.

I'm pretty sure you can find the Tokico struts on ebay pretty often for not too much...
