Tracer and XR2 clutch cables are the same! Order New!
« on: January 13, 2003, 05:17:00 PM »

NOTE: I still have to find out what model Tracer was that.

---------
My mechanic happened to have a mercury tracer in his shop because it also broke
its clutch cable. After hunting for my cable for a week, he was pulling the
cable off the tracer and noticed that they were identical. He ordered 2 one for
the tracer and one for my car. It fit and all is well. I also had a complete
clutch kit from Luk installed. I had to relearn to drive my car today. I used
to have to press 2-3 times as hard to engage the clutch, now it's very soft. We
think that the e-brake cables might match up as well so we're going to be
looking into that also.
I would like to thank Ray for finding me a good used clutch cable. However, I
had to go with the new tracer cable.

I am having the squeaky start up as well on my 91 XR2, where do I
find the "correct" pulley? Oh yea, when I replaced my belts this summer
AutoZone sold me the wrong belts, Napa sold me the correct ones.

All models of the 88 & 89 Tracer used the same clutch cable as the Capri XR2

OE Part # E7GZ-7K553-A

Aftermarket clutch cables are available brand new @ Any Discount Auto Part, Advance Auto or Napa.

The makers of this cable as well as the part #'s are:

Motormite - 15354
Beck/Arnley - 0930575

Both cables are between $30 and $45.

I said I wasn't going to do this, but I had to share. When I was searching for a clutch cable (prior to the Tracer revelation) I found a person that was selling a USED clutch cable for $100 plus shipping. How can you sell a USED and un-reconditioned part for twice as much as is was sold for when new? I guess that's that new finance, appreciation instead of depreciation.

It's such BS getting raped on parts.
Why is the drivers side window regulator so much more than the pass side, even at the dealerships.
(I know, I got a new one a year ago from mercury)

im going to go ahead and bump this..

AdvanceAutoParts has

Motormite Clutch Cable part # 15354 for $33

although they claim it will not fit a capri (all online auto parts stores think that the xr2 is a hydraulic set up)

O'Reiley has

Doorman Clutch Cable part $ 15354 for $27

same thing here... they claim it will only fit mazda 323 and mercury tracer

as said erlier in thread the motormite should fit,  i guess i'll find out soon enough

Also for a 100% sure fit, MCCM has them for $73

The OE cables seem to be much higher quality, is what Russ is saying.

What I see with a lot of these aftermarket Capri parts is they have been sitting on a shelf a long long time. Lubrication can be broke down, rubber can be dry and showing signs of early dry rot. I think Russ has a connection with the Aussie aftermarket which means fresher parts. Of course there are some in the state's where popular parts fit multiple vehicles. Something you might think is old I would try to rejuvenate. If you can add some graphite to the cable or something similar.

Each parts place sells quality brands and cheap brands. So if you never heard of a certain brand or have no experience with it then it's a gamble. Use Google to find reviews or ask someone with experience. I'm a tight wad, lol and search out bargains.

The old saying you get what you pay for applies. :)
Some of these brands at RA I never heard of. But they could have been a manufacturer with many brand names on the box. You'd be surprised how much of that goes on. For example Wix makes NAPA filters and a dozen other brands. Different names and different prices, all the same product.

We tried those cheaper cables, back in 2011....dropped our selling price to account for the cheaper acquisition cost.....sold well over a dozen of them within the first 6 months - every one of them were returned & refunded for breakage within 6 months - Every. Single. One. - No exception.

Yes, they are much more inexpensive than stock units, however, as has been mentioned....you get what you pay for.

Just my 2 cents....
