Engine problems
« on: July 05, 2004, 10:46:00 PM »

I have a small problem. I have a 93 N/A. Recently while on a drive my fan belt slipped, imagine that. I drove the car as far as I could to park it in a safe area. By the time I reached my final destination, my battery was dead, but the engine still ran, roughly, on the little amount the alternator was putting out. Now, after replacing the worn belt, the car is missing awfully. I can pull the #2 plug wires from the distributer with no change in running status. I nursed it home, at a max of 45-50mph, but there was no umph. Please help as I live out in the boonies and the redneck repair shops have never worked on these cars.

Hi, im not sure wich belt are u referring to, but i guess is the alternator bel, cause these cars have electrical fans, not the belt driven ones.

Did u check f the engine didnt overheat before u stop it? The alternator belt also drives the water pump, and when the belt brake, no more power from the alternator and the engine will overheat very fast.

As for its still missing im not sure what can be, but if the car overheat too much, that can be a problem...

Macau Capri!  What's up?  Ever solve your legal problem with the turbo?

Eric, Troubleshooting 101.  First, is the battery fully charged?  Electronic ignition will do strange stuff without a full charge.  Next, get some new plugs.  They are cheap.  Before you remove the old ones, test each wire one at a time by putting a new plug in the wire, grounding the plug to a bolt head, and starting the motor on the other three cylinders.  See if each wire has spark.  It doesn't?  Cap, rotor, wires.  It does?  Uh oh.  Get a compression gauge.  Probably can rent one at Autozone or Pep Boys.  Bring a spark plug so you get the right adapter.  Check compression on all four.  Tell us what you find, and we'll go from there.

Glad to hear it's all working out!  You've worked so hard on your car that you deserve to be able to enjoy it.
Sometimes I smile and have to think a bit when reading your posts, because English is not your first language.  (But you use English VERY well, and I can always figure out what you mean.)

However, ASSHOLE came across loud and clear!     No confusion there!

You mean that you actually know who this ASSHOLE is?  And he's STILL ALIVE?

PROBLEM SOLVED!! I checked the plug wires to see if there was any signs of overheating. I found #2 and #3 to be heated to the point of conductivity. I changed out the wires, plugs too since I was at that point. It runs fine now, I set the cruise at 85mph this afternoon, with A/C. I have restored some unique British Leyland equipment before and never saw anything quite like the spark plug issue we have on the Capri. As for the alternator belt problem, I am changing the pulley with one that is the same size, width and depth, as the rest of the pulleys on the engine, this should keep the belt from getting damaged. I am also changing out the upper alternator bracket with one from a Probe. These brackets have a tensioner built in that will help me keep the belt tight from the top of the engine. Thanks for the 101 lesson, I had forgot to look at the obviouse and assumed the engine was gone.
