Wondering what tranny's will cross into the Capri XR2.. I know that there are diff trannys that will bolt onto the B6T bell housing but mounts are different.. Now I need to know what trannys will fit and bolt right up to the Capri chassis.. Need info ASAP!

 THANKS!!.. Joe

I think one from a fwd 323 gt from the late 80's will work but i'm not positive. Try www.mazda323performance.com and go to their forums. They should be able to tell you.

You know reich racing had a FWD tranny listed on their website a little while ago for $45 see if its still there. I'm sure they could tell you for sure if it would work or not. It was used and would probably cost quite a bit to ship it from canada but hey if you need one you need one right.

91-96 1.8 powered 91-96 escort gt trans can work, except you'll need to get a n/a capri clutch master cyl and pedal assy, and the escort gt slave cyl assy to male it work. the shifter, bellhousing and other mount locations are all the same.

Hey you wouldn't happen to know how much power that tranny can take do you? If it can take more than the pathetic tranny thats in it I might consider doing that. Also do you know what the final drive gear is?

it's a g series trans like what the turbo capri originally came with. i understand the g series tranny can take about 300hp and after that wierd failures can occur like output shaft bearing races spinning in the case.

the real trick to tranny longevity is driving style and correct clutch adjustment. the 2 spider diff is not happy with violent wheel hop from a hard launch, and the synchros and shift linkage aren't going to live long w/ speed shifts or gear banging.

if you have someone who can mix/match parts, here is your dream tranny: Mazdaspeed Protege. It has a LSD and dual cone synchros inside it. i believe it will bolt up to the B6 motor, with install issues centering around adding a hydraulic clutch setup and having custom axles made to accept the 28 spline diff side gears.

i'd like to see someone swap out the 5th gear for something that lowers the rpms a bit at 65-70mph...
4th gear pretty useless anyways, so it wouldn't hurt the car too bad i think. I'd think we could squeeze 2-4 mpg out of that for highway driving...?

Theres a writeup for the 323 GT for a 5th gear swap.  The swapped gear comes from a Mazda 626 5spd, not sure what years though. It drops 5th gear RPM's by 500 lower than normal.

theres a 0.696:1 5th gear ratio that fits the turbo capri trans and is available thru ford - the part numbers are  F32Z-7K316-B and F8CZ-7144-BB. The locknuts part numbers are F5CZ-7N170-AA and 1L2Z-7N170-AA.

expect to pay around $180-200 for the parts.

0.795:1

here's Capri tranny gear ratios and speed at 3000 rpm (assuming 195-50-15 tires):

N/A trans (rounded):
1st - 3.42 - 14mph
2nd - 1.85 - 26mph
3rd - 1.29 - 38mph
4th - 1.03 - 47mph
5th - 0.82 - 60mph
reverse - 3.21 - 15mph
final - 4.11

turbo trans (rounded):
1st - 3.31 - 16mph
2nd - 1.83 - 28mph
3rd - 1.23 - 42mph
4th - 0.97 - 54mph
5th - 0.80 - 66mph
rev - 3.17 - 16mph
final - 3.85

of you changes the 0.795 to a 0.696 5th gear, 3000rpm would be changed to 75mph, and the 626's .717 would be 73mph.

afaik total choices for 5th gear in a capri turbo trans range from 0.88 to 0.70, and final drives from 3.45 to 4.59 (some will need custom axles)
