I’m not sure if I totally understand what they are, but it sounds like instead of having the one coil supplying the power for the plugs it has a coil at each plug. If that’s right, that’s definitely a new concept to me. But if it works on the in the 1.6 ltr 89-93 Mazda engine, I would think it would work for the Capri too. It even looks like the same engine as a N/A Capri in the picture, just with a different valve cover.

That is what the new mazda infact all new cars are starting to get. Its called a distrubter-less ignition system. Instead of having a distrbutor set of the sparks in a timed order. A computer instead sparks each plug at the time need to get the best explosion in the cylinder as possible. The only way to do this is to detinate the plug by itself. The method by which its done is what you see. Performance is maximized and fuel is both saved yet used to its full potentional. That kit is designed for the 1.6. I would assume that it could for from the capri both N/A and turbo but i would also assume wire harness tho the same may have different wires runing to them and may need some testing out.

Actually I am familiar with what, for instance, my ol lady’s 87 Bonneville has. It just has box with three ignition coils on it and no actual spinning distributor since a computer controls the ignitions as well as the fuel injection. But this one that mhack found sounds like it has four coils, one at each plug, which is what I find intriguing. I’d be interested to see how much of a difference a change like that to the ignition made with hp, torque, and emissions.

I don't think it converts our distributor driven system into distributorless but I could be wrong..
The think it does for sure it moves Coil to plug eliminating plug wire.. 1st you don't have to buy plug wires anymore, 2nd it's like buying very tick plug wires, resistance almost = 0

But we should find out if it actually converts distributor to coils.. I believe Miatas 1.6 already uses 2 coils and no distributor?

Okay I did some checking and although it looks like the Miata had an identical engine, it did have a different ignition setup. Which is probably one of the reasons why the N/A Miata put out more hp than the N/A Capri. It looks like that setup that they are displaying hooks up to an ignition module rather than a distributor. So unless you were going to do some major changes to the ignition system, I don’t think this would work on a Capri’s engine. Bur anyone feel free to jump in and tell me if I missed something in the setup that would mean that it would work though, because it sounds like a great setup for ignition.

Miata with more power then the N/A capri. I like to see that. The specs i saw say they the 1.6 only puts out 100hp at the wheels like te capri just at the rear and not the front. Now the 1.8 does 130-135 at the rear.

Interesting, I might have mixed up the hp outputs of the 1.8 and the 1.6 that the Capri has. It’s pretty amazing what you can squeeze out of 0.2 liters. But still, as far as I can tell the Capri and the Miata do have different ignition setups.

I havent noticed that. I do know when the 1.8 came out the igition system changed and when the 1.6z engine came out both the 1.8 and 1.6z uses now the distrubtless ignition system. I think the computer is what different on the miata
plugs and wires are interchangable on the capri and miata. Havent check if true for the distrubtor parts.

Yes I did find that the blue plug wires that I got for my Capri were available for the Miata too, but the ignition module and several other parts were different. (At least according to NAPA, but they have been wrong before.)

Possibly. Dont blieve that will not allow for the conversion to work. But 600 is an exspensive mistake.

If you want an expensive mistake, take the RX7 TII. I paid about 2 grand for it, and drove it I think three times. The time I pushed up to 165 I wrecked the apex seals as well as overheated the engine. What that meant is that with labor the Mazda dealer would need to put in a new rotary engine and it would’ve cost about 4 grand. I decided a year later to just bight the bullet and turn it over to a wreaker.

Right on, you made an article there just for my benefit.  ;)  It was pretty sucky that the RX7 was ruined, but none the less that was the fastest that I’ve had a car going, so in a way it was worth it.
