Even though AWD is better handling. there is nothing liking having power right behind you cause the car to go or fishtail or something.

Well, the only reason i would ever choose RWD over AWD would be if i was drifting. I have owned a medium modified Eclipse GSX and a Skyline. Both AWD and love it. The launching of an AWD take a lot of practice but once mastered you can fly. now the Skyline has an advantage..Remove the Fuse and it is RWD....thats what i did when i wanted to go sideways! I had fun in the 180sx and Cedric but there is no way i would get anything other then AWD if it was offered

RWD over AWD and only if the block is situated between axles.
AWD if I have over 400Nm of torque or live in extreme conditions etc snow or dirt.
But then there are so many AWD systems that emulate RWD systems that most disadvantages (not including weight) are negated.
AWD's are great for gaining exit speeds especially in tight corners like hairpins but aren't as nimble as RWD's in entry, braking and apexing.
Unbeknownst to most FWD's even have advantages over RWD's and AWD's, Most obviously is weight but then contradictory to that point is weight distribution.
FWD's can have the upper hand in tight down hill races but in the end it all depends on the driving style.
Very interesting poll and I can foresee alot of debate over the matter.

RWD,I have had a couple mid-engine RWD. You can not beat physics!I would love a late mod mr-2,but resale is high and they are hard and expensive to mod.

My bro has an 86 MR2. That thing is awesome.
Great at launch (in the dry) and very nimble around corners.
Thing about MR layouts is that sudden direction changes may prove to be very scary. Once the rear fishtails into or out of a corner its a bit of a handful. The weight at the back just acts as a pendulum. Our car in the condition we bought it really exagerated this effect even when driving normally in the wet. But after we upgraded the suspension, put on decent offset wheels and sticky tyres the thing just sits flat-pan and only kicks out when aggitated, easilly caught and throttled out of sweeping bends.
Very exciting (ie risky) layout. Not entirely sure how predictable modern day MR's are though. Ferrari seem to have the formula down pat.

Rocket-
The results of the poll thus far are no surprise!!  50/50! Like I told you on the phone, as much as we want to see an AWD Capri, nothing beats a good ol' burnout with RWD! 'Cept maybe drifting/powerslides!!

It is actually possible to have both setups on the one car. I have seen a video where it was done on a 2000 WRX in whereby standard he was driving AWD, and then when he wanted to switch to 2WD, he would pull a fuse out from in the bonet smewhere and the car ran on two... I dont know how he did it or what electronics and drivetrain mods where involved, but it was done. And in the video it was kept very secret. From memory I think it was from a Fast fours or Hot 4's video.... going back years now, so I cant remember the full story.

The AWD transmission that would work in an AWD setup would 'splode if you tried to route all the power through the transfer case. Its also purely mechanical, no fancy electronics.

Some AWD trannys can do that but not this one. So its either AWD via 323 GTX drivetrain, or RWD via 323 bits and Miata bits.

actually it is possible, the Skyline GTR and GTS-4 can both do it. I know I did it my self when i had mine. They are computer controlled. the power to the rear wheels are monitored and when it feels slip or depending on the road surface it transfers power to the front wheels. pulling the fuse disables this function so it puts all the power to the rear wheels. i dont care for the Scooby but it is possible it has the same system in it as well...

i just thought about it, there is a nissan GTI-R in japan that has the SR20DET in it and i think it is also AWD. Side mounted as well. maybe you can do an SR swap and swap the other parts as well...

Not interested in Nissan stuff. The 323 tranny cannot hold abuse at stock power let alone trying to force all the power to the rear wheels, so its not an option. It'd be an equal amount of work to put a RWD tranny as it would be to put a AWD, thus I want to see what people want to see. Mega-grip capri, or donut capable capri
