Turbo Set Up
« on: June 10, 2009, 03:28:00 PM »

i was looking into engine swaps for my sons corolla and saw this...it is a supercharged and turbo at the same time..kinda wicked

http://www.phoenixtuning.com/toyota/swaps/brandon.html

got me thinking about the turbo set up, why not relocate the turbo off to the drivers side where there is plenty of room. they you could use a miata manifold and run the pipe off to the left. they would let you pick any turbo you wanted basically.

thoughts?

Yeah I have seen some setups like that...there are also RMT's (lookup Remote Mount Turbo) which are a more extreme version of that. It kills spool time due to large preturbo manifold volume but if you're running a supercharger you dont really need to worry about it too much.

I started a setup to supercharge / twincharge my B6T but it gave up the ghost before I could complete the kit. The key is a custom intake manifold that tucks the supercharger up behind the engine so you have room for the turbo and such

like this one thats setup for a 65mm throttlebody

so moving it over to the side could have several benefits like less heat. would it spool up turbo faster too since it was not sitting on 4 runners?

That supercharger looks extreme.. WOW. Does anyone know of a capri twin-charged? I'd love to see it, and ride in it!!!

I dont think running a turbo like that will ever make it spool faster. Keep in mind the engine has to fill the runners before it can start to spool the turbo, large manifolds or ones with a lot of pre-turbo volume can be detrimental to spool time.

And yeah that supercharger is pretty extreme, its a twin screw type that gives the killer screaming sound thats obnoxiously loud. One of my goals is to twincharge a capri, I will hopefully get there one day. I wanted to do it RWD though because theres more room that way, plus having 300hp from 2k to 7k on a FWD car with no spool time whatsoever is going to cause massive traction issues

im curious on the remote mount set up,

i wonder if it would still pass emissions?

looks like it replaces the muffler, in the photos i seen..

the supercharger would be interesting as hell too. on the corolla article they said the car spooled up really fast, basically no lag at all
