Hmmm. I like your enthusiasm! A few things to consider:

The N/A has a the weaker of the two manual transmissions. It does not like much more than 130-150hp. If you don't abuse it, it will last a little longer. The XR2 came with a much stronger trans (still has its weak points though) The N/A also has a comparatively tiny clutch

A Miata manifold is top-mount. That'll put the turbo awfully close to the hood. They can be modified though. The cheap eBay Miata manifolds have a tendency to crack in the long run. Certain Honda manifolds can be modified to work - the port and bore spacings are very similar, but the bolt pattern is off. You can re-drill the flange.

For injectors-  The N/A has tiny injectors I think 220cc? The XR2 injectors are 300cc. DSM 450's will fit, as well as RX7 550's, but you'll need standalone ECU to control them.

For Computer - There are chipped ECU's available for the XR2 - (won't work for the n/a, different computer) The chip will allow you to raise the boost from stock (7-9psi) to 16psi. It does not cover larger injectors though

Lowering springs - There's a couple companies that make actual lowering springs, H&R, Eibach, and some on eBay recently popped up. GroundControl makes adjustable coilovers, you'll need to look up 88-89 Mazda 323 NOT 4WD on their website for the correct application.

The Miata 1.6 used the same exact head, there's nothing to gain there. It used some different coolant port on it that would need to be plugged. Aftermarket miata cams will work, yes.

Are there any good XR2's available in your area? They're a much better base to a turbo build on.
Hope this helps

So could I use an xr2 ECM and maf ? w 300 to 330 cc injectors? And reflash that? To start with, and only 9psi
I do have a Honda header, bottom mount
Will upgrade trans as it goes on. Not too harsh on it.
I had read that the miata head was a little better, from an online magazine.
In the long run I plan on swapping a mazdaspeed turbo engine and drivetrain, thanks for any help

You would need an XR2 ECU, engine harness, knock box, distributor, injectors, VAF. The N/A parts won't work.
The chipped XR2 ECU will support ~250whp, after than you'll probably want a standalone ECU. SAFC's don't work on the B6 engine management.

To convert the trans, you'll need the XR2 trans, XR2 flywheel, XR2 clutch, XR2 intermediate shaft, XR2 axles.

The Miata heads are no better, they're the same. Can you point to the article in question? On the 1.8L, which is a different engine, the later Miata eventually got the BP4W head which is better than the BP05 head, but neither of these fit on the 1.6

Which Mazdaspeed engine were you looking at going with?

I have the turbo ready to go on, maybe I put on w na maf and see what happens.

I figured I could put the xr2 ECM in place of old, replace the other parts, and go from there. Is the harness that different?
Is there an ECM from a different car, and harness, that is more tune able?

It doesn't say the head is better in the article. Just mentions cr and crank differences and oiling

The harness is different. The XR2 uses a unique ignition system tailored for the turbo, it needs the wiring for the knock sensor, knockbox, distributor, etc.

There's been talk about going to a Honda ECU, distributor, sensors, custom harness and running Chrome or Hondata but that's a heck of a lot of work. There was a guy on here recently who claimed to have done it but never posted pictures and dissapeared after that post. So IDK what the deal is with that.

There's standalone options like the Megasquirt that work very well

With just throwing the turbo on there I'd be very concerned for the motor. The injectors don't support much flow and the N/A engine is fairly high compression (9.4:1) to be gambling with boost like that

The 1.8 is a great swap either turbo or nonturbo. It requires notching the framerail to fit it but otherwise pretty straightforward. The F-series trans won't hold up to it at all though (BPT is 180hp stock, IIRC) You *need* a g-series for that. The BPT trans is AWD and won't work for FWD use

The N/A BP is 130hp and will work with the F-series trans, you can get them cheap at the junkyard from an Escort GT or Protege. I picked mine up for $100 locally and then turbo'd it

I thought about mega squirt of course.
Could I get the na ECM flashed or chipped for a little more flow or bigger injectors? Or both. Might try turbo on here, try to tune it, stay low on boost and piece together the 1.8 gtx parts and trans.
