alternator group buy
« on: November 04, 2010, 02:31:00 PM »

ok so i just got this email from mechman alternators and trying to work out a group buy thing

We have a specially designed large case conversion kit for that vehicle.  It replaces the trouble prone Mitsubishi unit with a late model ford unit.  It features a custom machined housing, new alternator bracket, and alternator harness.  The unit makes 150 amps by only 1200 rpm, and has OUTSTANDING low rpm output, even as low as 500 rpm engine speed. It comes standard with our custom rectifier, overdrive pulley, grounding lug, and HD regulator.  Our unit is 100% brand new (not rebuilt) made in the USA and comes with a one year warranty.

let me know what you guys think if anyone is intrested and i can see what i can do for a price for group buy

See what they want for price, but it might be easier and cheaper to mod a pre existing alternator to fit

Honestly the biggest problem I see is the pulley - the stock pulley can hardly support a 70 amp unit let alone something thats going to require twice the power...

The only way i see things working is converting to the later style Miata pulleyset w/ dual ribbed belts. I've been looking for a set of pulleys and I havent found a set, but I havent looked at the junkyard yet. Even still that might only work for the largenose crank engines
