Hey guys, I'm new to the Capri world and am hoping you can get me started.  I've got a '94 XR2 with some front damage, but mostly sheet metal stuff that I'm having fixed right now.  My question is.....it's been sitting for 9 months and is puffing a little white smoke.  No oil in water or anything, and I've drained the tank and added fresh gas and it seems to be getting "better", but what other precautions should I take?  Will do the simple stuff (fuel filter, PCV) but what other action would you recommend I take with respect to the turbo system?  Car has 117K on it.  Thanks in advance, Mike

Hey Mike! Isthe car reef green in color and you recently bought it in  Washington State outside of Seatle? It's Junk. Has a blwn engine , bent front frame horns,and a time bomb ticking in the trunk.  Gus

Gus, that's the one. Yikes!  I actually picked it up because I also have a '94 reef green n/a that needed the hard top off of it, so figured I'd have plenty of spare parts to boot (which apparently now I do!).  Been sitting all winter so I'm just now starting to mess with it.  Sure about the blown engine?  It's been cruising around town pretty well???  Thanks for the reply.  Mike

Hey Mike! Just joking about all the bad things. Dont know any further beyond body damage. It's just me being upset that I didn't call 5 mins. earlier on the car. The gentleman even offered to deliver to my door if your funds didn't clear the bank. But the white smoke indicates coolant in the cylinders. If it doesn't clear up, take two aspirin and call me to come pick it up.  Gus.

Gus, do you scare all the new guys like this?!?  Just kidding.....sorry I snagged it before you did.  I really only wanted the roof at first, but when I discovered how few of the '94 XR2's are out there I decided it's probably worth throwing a few bucks at if it's salvageable.  I just have a funny feeling it's going to be more than "a few" bucks.

Hey Mike! Just keep an eye on your backside. Just kidding again. It would be worth finding another reef green N/A to remove the necessary body parts from. Please don't scrap out that beautiful car. I have one in white that needs some uphostery work and I have ared one that needs a nose and tail piece and some very minor body work. From the pictures I got of your car, it'll need all front end metal and nose piece. The metal is the same as older Capris. The nose piece not. There is a fiberglass replica available but I wouldn't do it because of collectability. We'll talk some more.  Gus.

Now where have I heard that white smoke on startup is weak valve seals?  You probably can run it that way for another 100k and then redo the head.  
I'm also a newbie and will take my 91 out of storage next week and drive it cross country, NYC/Phoenix.  Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to sell it to finance my Festiva build.

no offense, but are you possibly mistaking the normal condensation burning out of the exhaust in the cold months fo something more sinister?

Hey XR2! For me I'm not used to cold like you guys get, but if you run your car for 30mins plus I would want to believe the white smoke should stop. If not, then a coolant leak is in effect. His next step would be to pull spark plugs and check their tips and note which are water wet. The two capris I've had to correct were both between 2 and 3 and just a gasket replacement took care of it. If it goes that far he should have a machine shop look at it and possibly have a valve job done. There are a couple of outfits on Ebay with great gasket set prices. I can get their names and adress' if needed  Gus.

When it gets REAL cold up here... in the - negatives, you can flog on a car for half an hour and still get smoke/steam/whatever visible from the drivers seat when you get on the throttle.  I'm not saying that this is what's happening but i just didn't want snortsdad to pull the head just to find it was completely normal cold weather smoke/steam/whatever.
EDIT: the magic 69th post, if I was paying attention I woul have made it something more interesting  :(

Thanks for the feedback guys.  I've "just" started messing with this thing and the smoking is 80% improved after simply draining the tank.  I'm betting (hoping) that a little bit of driving, basic maintainence, flushing of the fuel system, and - yes - warmer weather will all contribute to continued improvement.  Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing some expensive preventable damage to the turbo by "not" doing something after sitting so long.  Got lucky and found the body metal at a local salvage yard, but there ain't much left on that donor.  I suspect stumbling across a nose piece isn't going to be very easy, but I guess that's why they call 'em "project" cars.  I'll keep you posted on progress and needs.  Thanks again!
