Apparently this info isn't common enough knowlegdge, so I'm posting a thread here to help spread the info.

On the G-Series transmission you can swap the 5th gear from a .795 ratio to a .717 ratio. This will drop your highway RPM's 400-500 RPM and offer better fuel economy, and higher overall top end speed.

These gearsets come from other G5MR/G25MR series transmissions used in other Ford/Mazda cars. Russ @ Roo-Sport carries gearsets and come with install instructions

Here's OEM part numbers if you ever need them:
G560-17-611B - Primary Shaft 5th gear
G514-17-308 - Secondary Shaft 5th gear

The output gear has 33 teeth.
The input gear has 46 teeth.

sorry to ask dumb question but how do i know if my xr2 has this tranny?

Do you have an XR2? If yes, you have the correct G-Type transmission.

If you have a nonturbo, then you do NOT have the correct transmission.

Yes I have run a gear calculator on everything. This is using stock wheels/tires & stock rev limiter. Changing to larger wheels & going to a higher rev limit will increase the top speed

Of course I don't condone driving that fast, these cars get very scary at anything over 120mph

I've had the swap done, and I'm still reading a tad over 3000 RPM at 70 MPH in 5th.

Is there a possibility that the tachometer isn't calibrated properly?

I know, for example, that the speedo actually reads a couple MPH on the slow side (68 on speedo is really 70) ... but wheels/tires are stock.
