VJ-11 install write-up
« on: March 16, 2008, 03:07:00 PM »

Here's the write-up:

Remove random ****:

Notice the powersteering is out

Downpipe bolts are usually a bitch, but my car loves me so they came out in less than 5 minutes with hand tools

Loosen the manifold and remove the o2 sensor, I used a 3/4 inch wrench

Pull this and remove the bracket by the disty

Turbo/Mani is gone, make sure you remove all of the bolts in the support bracket underneath as well as all of the oil and coolant lines.

How to attach coolant lines to avoid cutting the actuator bracket

Assembly ready for installation

Installed and all lines routed, I couldn't get the stock oil feed to work so I dropped $38 at a local speed shop for this set-up

This was the bitchiest coolant line

From another angle, the OEM oil drain works

You will need the following parts:
VJ-11-$105
New oil feed-$38
New gaskets for the manifold, turbo and o2 sensor housing-$68
New downpipe-$100
Many random fasteners-$20

Reveiw: I gained 500 rpm of lag, 2250 to 2750 but gained serious amounts of power, this thing pulls like crazy; today I almost kept up with a stage 2 WRX shifting when my overboost sensor beeped (about 4500).  My exahust is noticably louder because of the freer-flowing exhaust housing.  I haven't been able to take it to redline yet since I couldn't get the wastegate actuator to play nicely with the VJ-11 so it has no boost control, I'm planning on rigging up an EWG.

It took me about 25 hours with hand tools on jack stands including multiple meal breaks and parts runs and I'm no hot shot mechanic.  Anyone should be able to do this swap by themselves in 2 days.

Your wastegate geometry is pretty screwy there thats why. The rod should be fairly parallel with the center of the turbo

I figured that was the problem, but I didn't want to screw around with it only to find out that it didn't work.  When I first installed it I just got sick of messing with it and bolted it in, now I reap the consequences.
