turbo questions
« on: May 29, 2010, 12:10:00 PM »

Hey guys-
theres a ford probe turbo at the junk yard, is this the motor that is supposed to bolt up to our cars?? I went to look at it but they are closed. What kind of turbo does it have, is it the VJ-11?? I know that matt said something about the 1.8 or something being very close, any input. Any one have a forged crank or know where to get one?

the first gen probe had the F2T engine which has the vj-11 turbocharger. however, i don't know if i will 'bolt up'. On the other hand i do have 2 very good vj-11's that i could be tempted to sell....

thanks yuri, i have a VJ-11 compressor and fan, for the hybrid update when I send it out, I was wondering about the motor. I know that it won't just bolt up, but i think i read that it was posible and not all that difficult.

Nope thats the F2T motor, its 2.2L 12valve SOHC. Its actually more or less a truck motor...won't bolt into the capri.

You'll want the 1.8L dohc from the 91-95 ford escort GT/ protege

Don't have to worry about the crankshaft, forged cranks are mostly for the big V8 guys, the little 4 bangers don't usually need them until you reach pretty ridiculous power levels, and even then it's far from the weakest link in the system.

FWIW the 1.8 Turbo was never offered in any vehicle in North America. All the BPT's are imported, or you can use a USDM BP block and add just the turbo parts.

The JDM bottom ends are stronger, but with the price of aftermarket rods these days the cost of a true JDM BPT can be offset by using a USDM block + aftermarket rods/pistons.

When I have some time I'll go over the swap and do a general outline

hey there are some injectors offered on ebay for $$75.00 for all 4, they are offered for a upgrade for a 90-93 mazda miata, they are tan colored denso injectors rated at 230 cc a minute, seller says they have been completely refurbished and has 100% feed back. Anyone know anything about these? I am getting reday to rewire the fuel pump and thought htese would be useful, any feed back.

Stock XR2 injectors are 300cc, you don't want to downgrade

i just put a vj5 on my capri everything is the same on a vj5 as a vj11. and yes it does bolt up, but not to the exhuast. besure to get the exhuast elbow and flange off of a vj5 it doesnt have the cat made with it like the vj11. and ounce you get the turbo on just take it to the muffler shop and get them to fininsh the exhuast from the flange back. thats what i did. oh and u will still run bout the same stock boost as a vj14.

The VJ11 exhaust housing does not have a cat mated to it. VJ11 & VJ5 are nearly identical.

I don't recommend running the full VJ5 or VJ11 with the stock compressors. The A/R of the turbine housing is meant for a 2.2L engine, which is fine if you are running a really big turbo, but its not going to give you nearly as much benefit as the 14/11 hybrid. The 14's turbine housing A/R is smaller and will keep the turbo spool time much quicker. When I installed a full VJ11 I noticed a lot more turbo lag.

With the Tbird compressor, its the only way to go, the 14's turbine housing chokes flow at those power levels.

Just my $0.02

Turbo info is all out there but unfortunately its spread out a bit and its kind of hard to search this forum for info.

I'll sit down one day and put together a thread with turbo info.

Basically theres a few options for sticking with a mostly stock car, go too big and you'll be spending big bucks on fuel management and clutch/internals and the like.

The stock turbo is an IHI VJ14. Its pretty tiny, and will support 160-180hp.

The Ford Probe turbo is a VJ11. It has a larger compressor, and is an upgrade to our compressor. It'll support up to about 220hp. The VJ5 is an older version of the VJ11.

If you're looking for a mild upgrade without major mods, opt for the VJ14/VJ11 hybrid.

Are you running more boost yet?

F2T motor SOHC? 2.2 now that won't work from a 92 probe or how do I know it's an F2T?

If its a turbo probe then its a F2T engine with a VJ11. The turbo is good, the "no good" above is swapping the whole motor into the capri.
