Rocket Chip
« on: August 17, 2008, 02:09:00 AM »

Ok so i was running the rocket chip on the way home from The Capri Gathering ( which was amazing ) and the boost gauge read 16 psi but it seemed like it was missing it would stutter a little bit and then jump up to power. Kinda like it was turbo lag but the turbo was doing 16 PSI but the power was delayed. Any responses to that.

What kind of fuel are you running? What is your base timing adjusted to? It sounds like your knockbox is kicking in and retarding timing.

Try retarding the timing a few degrees, and if you arent running premium fuel make sure you do so.

Also, are you going by the stock gauge? It isnt very accurate at then end of the scale. SunPro makes a boost gauge available for around $25, and most autoparts stores carry them now.

I ran my rocketchip on the way home, too, but I did not get a good result.  The truck barely ran, and only got about 6 miles to the gallon.  How do I fix this?

Gonna be a few weeks before we can get the 323 engine transplanted into the 92.  Then the 'chip will get put to good use, as well as the Starion Intercooler! To say I'm excited would be an understatement! Now, I just need to find my dual gauge pod a piller covers, install the racing seats and 5 point harnesses, new tires, rims, paint job,........and on and on and on........!!

Does this sickness never end????

If you are going to run high boost you HAVE to run premium fuel. That is your problem right there.

The is no way to adjust the knockbox, you rotate the distributor top toward the firewall (loosen two 12mm bolts on the dizzy ears going into the head) a few degrees to retard the timing. Retarding it makes it less prone to knock.

The wires will hold up no matter what timing you run, adjusting the timing just adjust how far before or after TDC on that cylinder arrives. Its still the same spark.

Hey Josh! Grinding metal?  You have to run the highest octane gas available anytime tou're boosting. Also get an air-fuel gauge installed. You're already making the mistakes I warned you about earlier. You must believe me or you will suffer grave circumstances. Listen up  Gus

sterling,

1) turn off caps lock please
2) you'll have so much more fun with a complete exhaust job (2.5" down pipe back without a cat)

but congrats on starting your performance mods

Sterling,
post up once you figure out how loud this exhaust is, some day I want my car to have only one cat and no muffler, but it'll probably be really f'in loud

It really is not bad, has a nice tone to it.  even my wife said its O.K. ! The guy who worked on it said the turbo and the cat should prevent it from sounding "raw". He was right. I think I will look for an oval tip with a resonator maybe.
