94xr2 rear struts?
« Reply #1 on: January 15, 2013, 10:51:00 AM »

Rear struts are not available. The stock 94XR2 struts were supposedly a bit stiffer than the others, and had a small stantion welded to it where a brace bolted fast. (Which is not present on any of the other capris) Replacing them with a normal 91-94 strut and removing the extra brace should be just fine, it should not detrimentally affect anything. Others might disagree? Up to you. I'd rather drive a car with new struts than worn out parts you just can't get

All 1994 Capris have the bracket that bolts to the strut.

The XR2 is "Sport". Firmer, yes; unknowm amount of additional charge to compensate the shorter travel.  Stiffer, no; same diameter as the non sport strut.

I believe the stiffness may come from the bracket itself. The Capri still has plenty of shimmy and wiggle to share with you.

Some rumors live longer than others...

Every response on this new thread has hands on experience with this.  These old rumors should no longer be presented as fact.

Matt, What are you doing with your '94?  And Russ weren't you remaking the SuperRoo into a '94?

Answer to OP questions.  The 1994 struts are NLA.  They are not the same as the 323.  I feel the 99% of the time that the newer strut will perform better without the brace will outweigh worrying about the difference the brace makes in 1% of driving.

That thread was from a year and half ago, before any of us knew what the difference was. No one had bothered to post what the difference was, instead, just telling us we were wrong. You were not the only one

Now that a 94xr2 sits in my driveway, as does one in Matt's, we know what the difference is, and we know how to get around it.
In the last year, I have sold at least 15 sets of rear struts to owners of 94's, and no, they all do NOT have that bracket - some do, some don't. I suspect it has a lot to do with the build date. All of the turbo cars do, however a majority of the 94 N/A's that my customers own do not. As time goes on, I'm sure we will finally figure out how to determine which cars have the bracket, and which do not. Either way, it doesn't really matter: to replace the rear struts, you must remove the bracket....simple as that.

The new 'Roo has undergone several changes, and that's before we have even touched the car! I have settled on a drive configuration, and that's it. I still need to pick an engine/trans combo, as well as cosmetic details. I still think it will have 94 bumpers and a (mostly) 94 interior. Hell, I still can't decide on a color!

You're not speaking as to wether or not the struts you sold to be fitted on 1994 models had the lobe or not. Would you please?

How do you KNOW that the cars did not have the bracket?

All 94s Ive seen, including auto, including out of state, have had the bracket. My eyes have seen them on about a dozen cars. Every time I looked there.

I've admired the effort and the result that was the SuperRoo.  I'm looking forward to the next evo of it.  Maybe with an 2.2T!  Any hints?

My apologies....The struts we have to sell, are 91-93's. They can be fitted with no issues, if you remove the extra bracket behind the brake caliper, as I previously stated.
Whenever a customer orders a set of rear struts for their 94 (we ask what year they are for), I inform them of this. Every customer has called back to let me know the status, as requested (I have an awesome customer base!!).

Thank you for your comments on the 'Roo.....I, too, am a HUGE fan of that car. No other Capri I have ever owned has matched it in terms of all-out performance, as well as "fun-to-drive" factor. Yeah, it's a very quick car, but it is (was?) an excellent city cruiser and my hands down favorite to take out for a leisurely cruise. When I used it as a DD, there was one particular road on my way to work, where the car would hit 125-130 EVERY time - just a small stretch, maybe 2 miles, tops. The rest of the ride, it was 60-65. I always arrived at work with a big ol' grin!!
No hints yet as to what the 'Roo II will be....only because I don't know yet. We've tossed around a 2.2, a 2.4, and I wouldn't mind figuring out a 6 cylinder....with a turbo (maybe supercharger). Who knows, if we can figure out how to shove a Chevy small block into it....

I have not posted for a while but my 94 NA original rear struts had the additional tab on them.  Just for reference, my 94 NA have a build date around April 28, 1994.

I now using the Tokico struts and shocks now with HR springs without the original brackets since 2005.

Thanks,
